What To Expect At Your First Dance Class

What To Expect At Your First Dance Class

Congratulations! You’ve signed up for your first dance class and now you’re wondering – what is going to happen? Is there a special code I’m supposed to know going in? Here’s exactly what you can expect with our Get Started experience for new students so you’ll feel prepared and comfortable as your take your first steps into dance.

Welcome Lesson

Our welcome lesson is exclusively for new students who are starting class that week. So it’s a very comfortable experience – you’ll either be in a small group or perhaps just be with your teacher. We’ve found it’s the best way to help new dancers feel prepared and ready to dance.

First we’ll share a bit about the do’s and don’ts of dance class etiquette so you feel safe and supported while learning to dance. Then we’ll introduce the basics of posture (how to align your own body for dancing), frame (how to connect with a partner), and lead and follow (how to communicate using the language of dance). We’ll share the basic building blocks of all social dances, and then we’ll put those pieces together and teach you your first steps. Yes, you’ll actually be dancing to music by the end of your first lesson!

Our proven process transforms hesitant beginners from “two left feet” to smooth social dancers, and it will be easier and more enjoyable than you ever thought possible. All you have to do is show up, and before you know it – you’ll be smiling as you glide around the dance floor 🤗

Intro To Social Dance Group Class

Our Intro To Social Dance group class is designed to teach absolute beginners how to dance with a partner to a variety of music. At class, you’ll see your friends from your Welcome Lesson, and we’ll introduce you to other students taking the class. We learn by repetition and so dancers stay at the intro level for several months to practice and refine their steps before advancing.

At class, we’ll demonstrate the first dance and then teach the leaders and followers their steps. You may ask questions at any time, and the teacher will offer help as needed. We’ll practice the moves solo to get comfortable before we try it with a partner. Then we’ll add music and you’ll be dancing!

Halfway through class, we’ll take a short break so you can relax, drink water, and socialize with your classmates. Then we’ll introduce a second dance and enjoy learning the steps. Be sure to ask any questions you have during class time so your teacher can help. The next class begins immediately, so there won’t be time for questions after the class ends.

Like learning any new skill or sport, learning to dance is a journey. You WILL be able to dance after your first class, and while it may not feel 100% perfect yet, it will only get better and better as you continue. Be patient with yourself (and your partner), keep showing up, and you too will grow to be a smooth and confident social dancer. Yep, it’s totally possible and we’ve helped thousands of students do just that!

Dance Party

Our dance party is the perfect place to practice your moves, socialize with your classmates, and make new friends. Practice is essential to learning to dance and dance parties give you the chance to build muscle memory, so that you can eventually dance with a partner to music almost without thinking about it. It will feel effortless and joyful, and all it takes is a some consistency and repetition. Dance parties take practice and make it FUN!

The party begins with a group lesson. This may be a review of a dance you’ve learned in class or a new dance. Either way it’s great to come to the lesson so you can get warmed up, learn a few steps, and meet other dancers.

After the lesson, we’ll play a variety of music so you can social dance, enjoy refreshments, and socialize with our community. You can dance as much as you like and also take time to relax and enjoy watching others dance. We can discover a lot simply by immersing ourselves in the dance world.

A note that the focus of a dance party is social dancing, so it’s not a time to ask questions, or have your teacher help you remember steps. Save those questions for your private lessons and enjoy the festive party experience.
