Waltz

Waltz is one of the oldest ballroom dances. The dance evolved from a German/Austrian peasant dance called the “Landler” which was popular in the 1700’s. Because Waltz was the first dance to feature a close hold between partners, it was considered immoral and scandalous in the Victorian era. Today, we think of Waltz as elegant, graceful, and romantic. Waltz is characterized by rise and fall, sway, and a smooth, gliding look.

East Coast Swing

East Coast Swing evolved from the original swing dance, the Lindy Hop, which was created in the 1920’s at the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem.  East Coast Swing was developed in the 1940’s by dance schools as an easier alternative to the high flying, athletic Lindy Hop.  East Coast Swing is a fun, upbeat dance and is danced all over America. East Coast Swing is characterized by its bounce, rock step, and swing hip action.

Tango

Tango was born in Argentina in the late 1800’s.  The passion of Tango, was initially shunned by upper class society but was soon a hit in Paris, London, and New York.  In the US, Tango was wildly popular before WWI and was standardized as a ballroom dance in the 1920s.  American-style ballroom Tango which has a stealthy, cat-like feel with an emphasis on sharp, powerful movements.

Rumba

Rumba is a broad term and refers to multiple music and dance forms.  It evolved mostly in Cuba in the 16th century. Rumba arrived in America in the 1920’s and was standardized as a ballroom dance in the 1950’s.
Often called the dance of love, Rumba is a slow and sensual latin dance characterized by its hip action. Rumba is also a very useful social dance as it may be danced to many popular “slow dance” songs.

Foxtrot

Foxtrot evolved in the United States to accompany the new ragtime music of the era. In 1914 a young dancer named Harry Fox performed his version of the popular “trotting” on the stage of the Ziegfield Follies. Fox’s trot became all the rage in New York and then England and beyond. Originally a wild and jerky dance, Foxtrot evolved into a smooth and elegant dance. Today’s Foxtrot is an American classic. It has a natural, easy-going charm which blends his Jazz age past to the timeless music of artists like Frank Sinatra & Michael Bublé.

Cha Cha

Cha Cha evolved from a version of Cuban Mambo, when dancers added steps between the forward and back breaks.  Legend holds that Cha Cha got its name from the sound of woman’s shoes shuffling across the floor.  Cha Cha was introduced to the U.S. in the 1950’s and remains popular today.  A fun and lively dance, Cha Cha has flashy steps and a flirtatious character.

Bolero

Bolero is a slow and romantic Latin dance which evolved from Afro-Cuban and Spanish folk dances. Bolero is beautiful, graceful, and romantic.

Salsa

Salsa is a fast and spicy Latin dance featuring exciting turns and spins. With roots in the Caribbean and latin culture, Salsa dancing was developed in New York during the 1970’s and evolved from the Cuban dance Mambo, Hustle, and other ballroom dances.  Unlike Mambo which is danced “on 2”; Salsa may be danced “on 1” or “on 2” (meaning dancers can break on the first or second beat of the measure), and there are many other variations and styles of salsa danced throughout the US and the world.

Bachata

Bachata developed in the Dominican Republic in the 1960’s.  At first, the upper echelon of Dominican society shunned Bachata music which were songs of heartbreak featuring Spanish guitar and maracas.  During the 1990’s the music began to modernize, gaining influence from Hip Hop, R&B, pop, & techno genres. Today, Bachata is one of the most popular styles of Latin music.  We teach sensual Bachata, which focuses on body rolls and connection as opposed to Dominician style, which focuses on footwork patterns.

Argentine Tango

Tango was born in Argentina in the late 1800’s.  The passion of Tango, was initially shunned by upper class society but was soon a hit in Paris, London, and New York. Argentine Tango is an intimate and passionate dance. There are many styles of Argentine Tango including the traditional milonguero (close embrace) and the more social (open embrace) along with stage tango. It is said that “Tango is a feeling that is danced” and we invite you to explore the beauty and artistry of Argentine Tango.

Belly Dance

Belly Dancing is a folk dance from the Middle East that has become stylized over the centuries. Belly Dancers use every part of their body – perhaps the hips most of all. Belly Dancing is known for its captivating feminine movements. Colorful costumes add to the mystique. An interesting note is that this dance is traditionally performed most often for other women, and is a fun female bonding experience.
