Three Keys to Closed Position

Three Keys to Closed Position 🔑

Closed position is a fundamental concept in smooth and rhythm dances, enabling dancers to connect and communicate in order to move smoothly and seamlessly with their partners.

Here’s a deeper look into three keys for closed position.
  • Offset Position:  Followers are responsible to maintain their position offset on the leader’s right side. This is especially important during transitions between proximities and points of contact.
  • Four Tracks of the Feet:  In closed position the right foot of each partner will step between their partner’s feet, while the left foot will step outside their partner’s feet. Thus each foot has a dedicated track in which to move.
  • Five Points of Contact:
    1. Leader’s left hand and follower’s right hand
    2. Body contact at upper thighs and torso (used for smooth dances and optional at the beginning levels)
    3. Leader’s right hand at the followers’s shoulder blade
    4. Follower’s left arm on Leader’s right arm
    5. Follower’s left hand on top of leader’s right upper arm (underneath for Tango)

By understanding the three keys of closed position, dancers enhance their ability to connect and communicate with their partners enabling them to enjoy beautiful dances that light up the world ✨
