Know Your Role – The Leader's Job on the Dance Floor!

Being a great leader in ballroom dance is more than just knowing the steps — it’s about moving with clarity, confidence, and care. A strong leader creates a comfortable and enjoyable experience for every partner!
🔹 Keep a Strong Frame
Hold your arms up and maintain a consistent-sized dance space for your partner. Keep your arms connected to your center so you can communicate clearly on the dance floor.
🔹 Think Ahead
Plan what step to do next while you’re dancing the current move. If you don’t plan ahead, your lead will be late and your partner won’t be able to process your signal and respond in time.
🔹 Pay Attention to Your Partner
Leading and following is a conversation. After you speak - listen. Notice your partner and how they respond. Did they notice and understand your intention? If not, how can you adjust to accomplish the move or to lead more clearly next time?
🔹 Practice
Only by practicing what you learn in class, can you become a skilled leader. Practice your moves on your own before you attempt them on the social dance floor.
🔹 Adapt to Your Partner
Great leaders enable every follower to feel successful and enjoy the dance. On the social dance floor, it’s not about showing off what you know or forcing certain moves, it’s about creating an enjoyable experience for your partner. Only lead moves that you know well and you feel your partner can do successfully.
🔹 Learn the Art of Floor Craft
Leaders are responsible for navigating the dance floor. Learn moves that help you turn quickly or stop forward momentum so you can avoid collisions. Be aware of other couples, maintain a predictable flow, and keep your partner safe as you move around the room.
🔹 Work on Musicality
A dance will never feel quite right if you’re not dancing to the beat of the music. Leaders, it’s your responsibility to communicate the timing for each move. Once you can confidently dance on the beat, work on your phrasing and hitting the high points in the music. Leaders who have mastered musicality are heavenly to dance with.
🔹 Let Your Partner Shine
A great leader gives space for their partner to shine on the dance floor. Don’t make it about you - think about ways to showcase your partner.
A confident and considerate leader makes every dance a pleasure. 💫
