The Queen laughed…
As we prepared for the bicentennial of General Lafayette’s visit to Beaufort, our student Catherine, a gifted amateur archaeologist and historian, did some digging and discovered that the Marquis was known to be a poor dancer 🤭
Intrigued, I asked Lafayette about this when we met. Indeed, he confirmed the rumors…
It happened at court, he said. General Lafayette was dancing with the Queen of France, Marie Antoinette, and he was supposed to turn right, but he made an error and turned left. He was so clumsy that the Queen couldn’t stop herself from laughing.
Now, if this can happen to a hero of the American Revolution - a noblemen reared in the dance arts - it can happen to us mere mortals as well.
In fact this is the very thing that holds so many people back from stepping foot on the dance floor.
They’re terrified that they’re horrible dancers and if they try to learn, people will point and laugh and there’ll be much mockery, shame, and embarrassment.
This is actually the opposite of how we treat beginner dancers at our studio. People are kind, patient, and super accepting of everyone - even if you have two left feet ☺️
Here’s the truth:
