Avoid Giving Unsolicited Feedback

Correcting the dancing of others is a no no here at Revolution Ballroom. Apparently it’s been an ongoing issue at ballrooms for centuries as evidenced by this verse from Mathew 😅📖✨

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?”
– Matthew 7:3-5

Avoid Giving Unsolicited Feedback 🙌

  • Encourage Self-Discovery:  Allow dancers to explore and learn at their own pace. Self discovery is crucial for the growth of dancers.
  • Build a Positive Environment:  A supportive atmosphere without criticism fosters creativity and enjoyment. Compliment rather than correct your partner if you want to nurture their development as dancer.
  • Respect Personal Space:  Offering unsolicited advice can invade personal space and disrupt a dancer’s confidence and joy.
  • Consent to Professional Instruction:  Students enrolled in class have consented to feedback from their teacher; don’t assume that they welcome or desire corrections from other students. If someone seeks help, it’s best to direct them to their teacher or coach.
  • Maintain Dance Etiquette:  Good dance etiquette involves dancing with and appreciating others without offering unsolicited feedback. It helps maintain harmony in the dance community.
  • Don’t Make Assumptions:  They are many ways to dance so we never want to assume that our way is correct and that others are wrong. We also never want to assume that we have more knowledge than someone else – you never know. The ballroom world abounds with stories of newbie dancers blithely “correcting” champion dancers.

Remember, the best way to support fellow dancers is by offering encouragement and leaving constructive feedback to the professionals. Let everyone enjoy their dance journey! 🌟
