Matthew Curiel

"It's honestly the best part of my week to come to class and to hear beautiful music and synchronize with it, and another person. It's an exercise that tests me on different levels of attention, posture, balance, and to just, more importantly have fun!"

Tell us about you - your work, your family, your hobbies and interests?

My name is Matthew Curiel from Southern California and I'm in the Navy currently stationed in South Carolina. I'm an aspiring nurse and I love traveling, outdoor activities, and learning new exciting things like dance!

What inspired you to start dancing?

My inspiration story to start dancing came from a story of embarrassment, where I attended a Quinceanera with a friend of mine as her date, and at this party, not just one... BUT TWO GIRLS approached me to dance with them. I was so embarrassed because I had no idea what I was doing, I was stepping on their feet, my timing was off, I bumped heads with them, it was just plain horrible and embarrassing! I faked it until I made it when the song was over, and I promised myself I could never let another opportunity like this ever happen in my life!

What classes and activities have you participated in at Revolution Ballroom?

I knew I needed serious work, so I started with group classes and moved my way into private lessons and attended every dance party since I started. Hitting every class from Salsa, Bachata, Tango, Argentine Tango, to all ballroom dances at Revolution Ballroom it has definitely been an enriching experience.

How has dance enriched your life?

It's honestly the best part of my week to come to class and to hear beautiful music and synchronize with it, and another person. It's an exercise that tests me on different levels of attention, posture, balance, and to just, more importantly have fun!

What do you love about dancing at Revolution Ballroom?

The studio has been responsible with all precautions during the pandemic, the length of class to me is perfect for me, the instructor is the sweetest, most patient person I could ask for. I've never felt like I was being judged, reprimanded, or upset even on days when I bring my two left feet to class.

What advice do you have for someone just getting started?

If I had any advice to a younger version of me or anyone that is curious about taking dance classes. It would be, "Don't wait!" and "Just SHOW UP!" Dancing with someone is such a beautiful experience and I personally wish I started journey YEARS AGO!  Also, you can't expect to be amazing the first time you're taught something but if you just show up to class and put that little bit of effort you'll notice you can only get better and it's inspiring, it makes me want to keep coming to class every week!

Anything else you’d like to share?

I'm so glad I found this passion for dance and it’s definitely something that I would love to continue the rest of my life!
