Yay, I did it!

I get it; we don't want to struggle - we want to feel successful 🤩

So that's why students in dance class say to me, "It's easier to do it faster".

When we're working on dancing a move s-l-o-w-l-y they'll fuss and ask to speed it up.

Because when we dance something slowly it exposes all our weaknesses:

  • Am I off balance here?
  • Is my dance position unclear during this transition?
  • Do I know the correct footwork for each weight change?

Dancing something fast hides all our mistakes. So it feels better 😄

But it's a mirage of success, and it doesn't improve our dancing 😐

Dancing slowly gives us the opportunity to notice and polish all the pieces so that when we do dance it at tempo - it won't just be faster, it will also be correct 😅

If you can't dance it slow - you can't dance it fast.

If we're not able to dance something slowly that shows us that we're not able to dance it correctly when we go faster.

But we can definitely deceive ourselves into thinking we've got the move down by going faster ☺️

Because when we go quickly - we start a move and then we get to the end and say - yay I did it!

And it's easy to overlook the mistakes - the middle bits that aren't quite smooth.

But fixing mistakes is how we make our dancing better.

So there's no shame in the struggle. It's good thing.

Because as we work through things slowly, we sharpen our skills and our dancing gets better.

That's why I recommend practicing moves slowly at first.

So don't fly through figures chasing a false sense of success.

If we're struggling to dance something slowly, it's not a sign to speed up.

It's a sign to stay with the struggle so that we can learn and improve.

Be willing to engage with something that maybe we can't do right away.

It might feel awkward and difficult because we're learning something new.

It's normal to feel wobbly with new moves; with repetition you will get better and it does get easier.

So allow yourself time to work through challenges. Enjoy the process and this moment right where you are.

And know that you're becoming a better dancer with each slow and steady step 🌱
