3 Pillars of Dance: Private Lesson
Do I need private lessons? While many people begin ballroom with just group classes, eventually you'll want to take some private lessons to level up your skills. Here's why:
Group classes, private lessons, and dance parties are designed to work together. You’ll learn best when your dance program includes all three pillars.
Let's take a look at Private Lessons
Why You Need Private Lessons:
While you can learn quite a lot from group classes, private lessons are essential for developing proper technique and style. You’ll also learn faster with personalized feedback from your teacher.
Your teacher doesn’t have time to correct every mistake in a group setting or do a deep dive on every aspect of good dancing, so private lessons are the best way to refine your moves so that every step looks smooth and feels great!
Students who take only group classes often develop bad habits or poor technique simply because they don’t know what they don’t know.
A Private Lesson Story...
I once had a student who learned to dance by attending our weekly dance parties. Because we taught a short beginner group class before the party, he eventually picked up enough moves to be able to confidently dance all night long.
So at that point he considered himself a dancer, perhaps even a good dancer. He certainly never had any complaints.
No one finished a dance with him and said “hey you’re a pretty sloppy dancer. It’s actually really uncomfortable to dance with you. I think it would help if you took some lessons” 😅 Social dancers are polite that way.
After a year of social dancing, he decided to take some private lessons. He started learning proper technique, and it honestly blew his mind. He had no idea that there was more to learn than what he had picked up at group classes.
He started becoming a skilled leader; ladies were excited to dance with him. People started complimenting his dance frame and said how enjoyable he was to dance with. He felt super confident on the dance floor.
But he still attended dance parties and enjoyed them. And then an interesting thing started to happen…
He began noticing that some people had poor technique. It was a bit frustrating for him because it was challenging to dance with them. But of course he never said anything. If only these people knew you could take private lessons to clean up your technique and become a more enjoyable dance partner ☺️
When To Take Private Lessons?
While some people prefer to start with private lessons, many dancers begin with group classes. This is a great way to try ballroom and see if it’s right for you.
When you’re ready to take your dancing to the next level, it’s time to invest in some private lessons.
If your schedule and budget permit, it’s very helpful to take private lessons even as a beginner. You’ll learn proper technique right from the start and will avoid years of frustration trying to undo bad habits.
